We find BillMoreBill grew up on the Upper Mississippi, and as a child he led the River Rats, a feral group of boys rumored to have mystical and supernatural powers.

But his life is shattered when his best friend dies at age fifteen of a heroin overdose. We find Bill at age thirty, behind a potted plant in a viper’s nest of lawyers. He is a shy, timid man, a shell of what he once was and could have been. But he is about to have an adventure that changes his life.Bill aspires to become a partner in his law firm, and his only hope is to bring in a large client.

The opportunity arises when a friend asks him to entertain John Walker, the general counsel for Autopsy Saw Corporation. John Walker is a native New Yorker with the improbable dream of whitewater rafting down the Mississippi River. Bill and several friends arrange for a pontoon boat and a keg of beer, and together with John, they push off on a warm summer’s day.Out on the river, Bill runs into members of his old gang, the “River Rats.” Soon his pontoon boat is part of a rag-tag flotilla of assorted watercraft, and the stories pour out as old friends reconnect.

But trouble looms in the form of Mike Snike and his yacht, the Squid Pro Quo. Snike is a senior partner in Bill’s law firm and a man consumed by hubris and greed. He intends to steal the client away, but Bill is having none of it.Snike knows the legend of the River Rats, and he confronts Bill with a gun in the cabin of the Squid Pro Quo. Bill believes his shot at partnership is over- but the long-forgotten powers he wielded as a child are beginning to return.

When the Squid Pro Quo is badly damaged in a boating accident, Snike is forced to retreat without the client. He vows revenge. The remaining group of men floats down the river and stops at a carnival as night is falling. Bill encounters Judith, a long-lost childhood love, and continues his journey of self-discovery. The other men clown around with River Rat initiation rites and soon find themselves under arrest. A tenacious Mike Snike steps out of the shadows to their defense in an effort to impress John Walker- but due to a misunderstanding, he himself is arrested and dragged screaming to a squad car.

It is Bill’s moment. The powers have returned. He leads a daring escape to the river with his crew. The men set up camp on an island. Chaos and animal spirits rule the night. In a terrible mix-up involving alcohol, a man in a bear costume, and a real bear, Bill prevents a murder, betrays a friend, and lands John Walker as a client.

On the beach in the darkest hour, he faces the ghost of his childhood friend, dead twenty years. He is right back where he was, at a fork in the road.Terribly hung over, the men push off their boat the next morning and promptly fall asleep. They awake in the restricted zone above the Coon Rapids Dam. As a forty foot drop looms, decisions must be made. The man in the bear costume won’t wake up. Or is it a costume?River Rats explores the loss of childhood innocence and the power of redemption when that innocence is reclaimed.

It is black humor of the darkest variety, beset on all sides by rabid lawyers, greedy doctors, and the pressures to succeed in the modern world.
